Managed by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, Noida, under the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education (MoE), JNVs are fully residential, co-educational institutions affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). They offer classes from 6th to 12th grade.

The Ministry of Education funds all activities at JNVs, ensuring free education for students during their first three years. From 9th grade onwards, a nominal fee of ₹600 per month is charged for general and OBC category students.

JNVs are present across India, except in Tamil Nadu. As of December 31, 2022, there were 661 JNVs with approximately 2,87,568 students enrolled, 87% of whom were from rural areas. In 2022, JNVs ranked among the top CBSE schools, achieving a pass rate of 99.71% for 10th grade and 98.93% for 12th grade.
